Levi is the proper name of the third son born to Jacob and Leah, explained by the folk etymology 'now my husband will be joined to me' (Gen 29:34, playing on the root lwh, 'to join'). The name serves double duty: it refers to the patriarch himself -- notably in the violent episode at Shechem (Gen 34:25-30) -- and to the entire tribe that bore his name, which was set apart for priestly service. Numbers 18:2-4 exploits the name's etymology in a wordplay associating the Levites with 'attendants upon' Aaron.
