Lo-debar, a town in Gilead east of the Jordan River
A settlement in the Transjordan region of Gilead, perhaps east or northeast of Mahanaim. The name appears to mean 'no pasture' or 'no thing,' possibly a folk etymology or wordplay. Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, took refuge here after Saul's house fell. Later, during Absalom's rebellion, a benefactor from Lo-debar brought provisions to David at Mahanaim—suggesting a community loyal to the Davidic house despite sheltering Saul's descendant.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Second Samuel 9:4-5 locates Mephibosheth 'in the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar' (בְּלוֹ דְבָר/מִלּוֹ דְבָר), where David retrieves him to honor his covenant with Jonathan. Second Samuel 17:27 names Machir 'from Lo-debar' among those who supplied David's forces during Absalom's revolt. The settlement's precise location remains uncertain; Joshua 13:26 may reference it (reading לִדְבִר for MT). Translations consistently transliterate (Spanish Lo-Debar, French Lo-Debar), preserving the proper name despite its semantically suggestive components. 3×
