Chaldeans, Chaldea -- the people of southern Mesopotamia (especially under Nebuchadnezzar) and their territorial homeland.
Refers to the inhabitants of southern Mesopotamia who rose to dominate the Neo-Babylonian Empire under Nebuchadnezzar. In earlier texts, the Chaldeans appear as a distinct ethnic group dwelling along the lower Euphrates and Tigris, as in the ancient place name 'Ur of the Chaldeans' (Gen 11:28). In the prophetic books, especially Jeremiah, Isaiah, and Habakkuk, they become virtually synonymous with the Babylonian imperial power that destroyed Jerusalem. A handful of occurrences use the name geographically for the territory itself -- 'the land of the Chaldeans' (Jer 50:10, Ezek 16:29).
Senses
1. Chaldeans (people/nation) — The Chaldean people as an ethnic-national group -- the inhabitants of southern Mesopotamia, especially as aggressors and imperial overlords under the Neo-Babylonian dynasty. Spanish 'los caldeos,' French 'les Chaldeens,' and German 'der Chaldaeer' all treat this as a stable gentiliic. Prominent in prophetic judgment oracles (Isa 13:19, 'the glory of the Chaldeans') and in the historical narratives of Jerusalem's fall (2 Kgs 25:4-5). 76×

2. Chaldea (land/region) — The geographical territory of Chaldea in southern Mesopotamia, used with directional or locative force, often in the construct 'land of the Chaldeans' (eretz kasdim). Spanish distinguishes 'Caldea' (place) from 'los caldeos' (people), and English shifts to 'Chaldea' or 'Chaldea-ward.' Key passages: Jer 50:10 ('Chaldea shall become plunder'), Ezek 16:29 ('the land of the Chaldeans'). 6×
