Carchemish, major Hittite city on the Euphrates River
An important ancient city on the western bank of the Euphrates, serving as capital of a Hittite kingdom and later a significant Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian center. Its mention in Isaiah represents the relentless advance of Assyrian conquest. Most famously, Pharaoh Neco II marched to Carchemish in 609 BC, where King Josiah fatally intercepted him at Megiddo. Later, in 605 BC, Nebuchadnezzar's decisive victory over Egypt at Carchemish shifted Near Eastern power to Babylon.

Senses
1. sense 1 Isaiah 10:9 lists Carchemish among conquered cities in Assyria's boast: 'Is not Calno like Carchemish?' Second Chronicles 35:20 records Josiah's ill-fated confrontation with Neco 'at Carchemish by the Euphrates' (בְּכַרְכְּמִישׁ עַל־פְּרָת). Jeremiah 46:2 dates Nebuchadnezzar's crushing victory 'at Carchemish on the Euphrates,' a turning point that ended Egyptian dominance. The city's Assyrian name Kargamis appears in cuneiform records; its ruins lie at modern Jarabis on the Turkish-Syrian border. Translations transliterate: Spanish Carquemis.
