Cushan-rishathaim, king of Aram-naharaim who oppressed Israel for eight years
Cushan-rishathaim appears as the first foreign oppressor in the book of Judges, a king of Aram-naharaim (Mesopotamia) to whom God delivered Israel because of their idolatry. His unusual name, which might mean 'Cushan of double wickedness,' puzzles scholars since no extra-biblical records confirm his existence. He ruled over Israel for eight years until God raised up Othniel to deliver them. The name may be a derogatory Hebrew epithet rather than the king's actual name.

Senses
1. sense 1 Cushan-rishathaim appears four times in Judges 3, twice introduced as 'Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram-naharaim' to whom Yahweh sold Israel in judgment (Judg 3:8), and twice as the oppressor whom Israel served eight years until Othniel defeated him (Judg 3:10). The Septuagint renders it Chousarsathaim or Chousanresamōth, showing Greek attempts at the double name. Spanish, French, German, and English all preserve it as Kushan-Rishataim with minor spelling variations, treating it as an untranslatable foreign royal name.
