Jerubbaal ('let Baal contend'); the alternate name given to Gideon after he destroyed Baal's altar.
An alternate designation for Gideon son of Joash, bestowed after he tore down the altar of Baal in Ophrah. Judges 6:32 offers the folk etymology: his father declared 'let Baal contend against him,' daring the pagan god to defend his own honor. The name persists through the Gideon cycle (Judg 7-9), dominating the Abimelech narrative, where all nine chapter-9 occurrences use Jerubbaal rather than Gideon. Samuel invokes it in his farewell speech (1 Sam 12:11). In 2 Samuel 11:21, the variant Jerubbesheth replaces ba'al with bosheth ('shame'), reflecting later scribal discomfort with Baal-element names.
