Joppa served as ancient Israel's primary Mediterranean seaport, the harbor where Jonah attempted to flee from God's command and where timber from Lebanon arrived for Solomon's and Zerubbabel's temple projects. Located on the coast northwest of Jerusalem, this city appears in Egyptian, Assyrian, and Phoenician records under similar names (Ye-pu, Jappu), confirming its longstanding strategic importance. The Greeks knew it as Ioppa, and it became the Lydda of New Testament times, where Peter ministered.
