Yetur/Jetur, Ishmaelite son and tribal name, ancestors of Ituraeans in Anti-Lebanon region
A personal and tribal name for one of the 'sons' of Ishmael listed in Genesis 25:15 and 1 Chronicles 1:31, who later gave his name to a tribe. This tribe appears in 1 Chronicles 5:19 as among those with whom Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh made war. The classical sources identify them with the Ituraeans (Greek Ἰτουραῖοι), known to Strabo and Josephus, who inhabited the Anti-Lebanon region. Luke 3:1 mentions 'the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis' in the time of Jesus, showing this people group's enduring presence in the region. The name may connect etymologically with the word for 'encampment' (טִירָה).

Senses
1. sense 1 An Ishmaelite clan name that evolved into an ethnic designation for a people inhabiting parts of Lebanon. The survival of the name into the New Testament era (as Ituraea) demonstrates the remarkable continuity of tribal identities in the ancient Near East. The tribe represents one stream of Abraham's descendants through Ishmael who maintained a distinct presence for over a millennium.
