To be in heat, breed (of animals); to be warm, get hot (of persons/things); (Piel) to conceive a child.
A root whose meaning radiates from the basic sensation of heat. In its most frequent use, it describes animals going into heat -- Jacob's breeding strategy with Laban's flocks depends on when the animals 'were in heat' at the watering troughs (Gen 30:38-41; 31:10). German Brnstigwerden ('going into rut') and Spanish encenderse en celo ('to kindle in heat') both capture this zoological specificity. The same root applies to ordinary physical warmth: old King David could not 'get warm' (1 Kgs 1:1), and two lying together 'will be hot' (Eccl 4:11). A single Piel occurrence in Psalm 51:5 elevates the meaning to human conception: 'in sin my mother conceived me' -- a transfer from animal breeding-heat to the theological mystery of human generation.
3. conceive (a child) Piel: to conceive a human child, a singular extension from animal breeding-heat to human generation. Psalm 51:5 stands alone: 'in sin my mother conceived me' -- a verse central to the theology of original sin. The transfer from zoological to human reproduction is marked by the Piel stem, and Spanish me concibi and German conceived-mich confirm the distinct 'conceive' meaning.

1. be in heat, breed Being in heat or experiencing breeding arousal, said of livestock during mating season. All five occurrences cluster in the Jacob-Laban narrative (Gen 30:38-39, 41; 31:10), describing the flocks' sexual heat at the watering troughs. German Brnstigwerden ('going into rut') and Spanish encenderse en celo ('to kindle in heat') preserve the specifically animal-reproductive register.

2. be warm, get hot Becoming physically warm or hot, applied to human bodies or objects gaining temperature. Aging David's attendants sought someone to help him 'get warm' (1 Kgs 1:1), two lying together 'will be hot' (Eccl 4:11), and the avenger's heart may 'grow hot' in pursuit (Deut 19:6). Spanish calentarse ('to warm oneself') and French tre brlant ('to be burning') track the straightforward thermal meaning.
