Jehoiada — 'the LORD knows,' the high priest who restored the Davidic line and David's warrior Benaiah's father
Yehoyada ('the LORD knows') towers above all as the high priest who overthrew Queen Athaliah and crowned the child Joash as rightful king of Judah (2 Kgs 11-12; 2 Chr 23-24). His 51 occurrences cluster around two bearers: this priest at Jerusalem and the father of David's warrior Benaiah (2 Sam 8:18; 23:20). The formula 'Benaiah son of Jehoiada' recurs so frequently it functions almost as a compound name. The Chronicler notes a further Jehoiada (1 Chr 27:34), and Jeremiah mentions a later priest of the same name (Jer 29:26). Spanish 'Joiada,' French 'Jehojada,' German 'Jojada.'
Senses
1. Jehoiada, priest — The proper name Yehoyada (Jehoiada), referring primarily to two individuals: (a) the father of Benaiah, David's captain of the Cherethites and Pelethites, recurring in the formulaic patronymic 'Benaiah son of Jehoiada' (2 Sam 8:18; 23:20, 22; 1 Kgs 1:8, 26, 32, 36, 38, 44; 4:4); and (b) the chief priest who hid the infant Joash for six years during Athaliah's reign, then organized the coup that restored the Davidic dynasty (2 Kgs 11:4-12:16; 2 Chr 23-24). All 51 occurrences refer to one of these bearers, with the Septuagint rendering Iodae and variant spellings confirming the same theophoric name across traditions. 51×
