Causar aflicción, atormentar (causativo); estar afligido, padecer tristeza (pasivo-reflexivo).
El verbo יָגָה abarca el dolor tanto en su imposición como en su experiencia. En sus formas causativas (Hifil y Piel), describe la acción de provocar aflicción: Dios 'no aflige de corazón' a los hijos de los hombres (Lm 3:33), pero los enemigos de Jerusalén 'la han afligido' (Lm 1:5, 12) y los amigos de Job lo 'atormentan' con palabras (Job 19:2). El Nifal pasivo vuelve la mirada hacia dentro: las vírgenes de Sion 'están afligidas' (Lm 1:4) y los desterrados dolientes de Sof 3:18 cargan el peso de las fiestas perdidas.
