Faithful, godly, pious — one who practices covenant loyalty (chesed); of God: gracious and merciful
The adjective חָסִיד is built directly on the noun חֶסֶד ('covenant loyalty, steadfast love') and describes the person who actively practices that quality. In the Psalms especially, the חֲסִידִים ('the faithful ones' or 'saints') are God's devoted community who receive his protection and are called to praise him (Ps 149:1, 5). As an individual epithet, it describes the godly person who mirrors God's own loyalty — 'with the faithful you show yourself faithful' (2 Sam 22:26 / Ps 18:25). Most remarkably, the word is applied to God himself at Psalm 145:17 and Jeremiah 3:12, where he is declared חָסִיד — gracious, merciful, the very source of the chesed his people are called to embody.
3. gracious / merciful (divine attribute) A divine attribute: gracious, merciful, kind — applied to God himself rather than to human beings. Psalm 145:17 declares 'the LORD is righteous in all his ways and חָסִיד in all his works,' and Jeremiah 3:12 has God say 'I am חָסִיד.' Here the adjective ascends from describing the human practitioner of chesed to its ultimate source. Spanish 'misericordioso' and English 'gracious' in these passages reflect the theological shift from creature to Creator as the subject of covenant faithfulness.

1. faithful ones / saints (community) The faithful ones or saints as a community — the collective body of God's covenant people, always in the plural and typically with possessive suffixes ('his faithful ones,' 'your saints'). Psalm 37:28 promises that the LORD 'does not forsake his faithful ones'; Psalm 149:1 calls the חֲסִידִים to sing a new song; and 1 Samuel 2:9 declares that 'he will guard the feet of his faithful ones.' Spanish 'piadosos/fieles,' French 'fidèles,' and German 'Heiligen/Frommen' confirm the communal, devotional sense. 21×

2. faithful/godly one (individual) A single godly or faithful individual — the substantive adjective used of one person who embodies covenant loyalty and piety before God. David is addressed as God's חָסִיד at Psalm 89:19; the psalmist appeals to his own status as חָסִיד at Psalm 86:2; and 2 Samuel 22:26 describes the reciprocal principle: 'with the faithful one (חָסִיד) you deal faithfully.' Deuteronomy 33:8 applies the term to the priestly tribe: 'your Thummim and Urim belong to your godly one.' The individual use highlights personal devotion rather than collective identity. 11×
