Enoch (son of Cain / son of Jered); Hanoch (son of Reuben / son of Midian)
Senses
1. Enoch (son of Cain / son of Jered) — Enoch (Hebrew חֲנוֹךְ, transliterated Chanokh), referring to either of two figures in Genesis: (1) the son of Cain, after whom Cain named the first city (Gen 4:17-18), and (2) more prominently, the son of Jered in the line of Seth, the pious patriarch who 'walked with God' and was taken by God without dying (Gen 5:18-24). The Genesis 5 Enoch lived 365 years and is notable for the repeated phrase 'Enoch walked with God.' Both figures share the same name and cannot be distinguished morphologically, but the narrative contexts differ substantially. The Sethite Enoch became a major figure in Second Temple literature (1 Enoch, 2 Enoch). Multilingual glosses: خَنُوخ (Arb), Chanoch (Deu), हनोक (Hin), 에뇍/에뇽 (Kor), Hanoj (Spa). Includes 1 Chronicles 1:3 and 1:33 genealogical parallels. 10×

2. Hanoch (son of Reuben / son of Midian) — Hanoch (Hebrew חֲנוֹךְ, the same spelling as Enoch but conventionally transliterated differently to distinguish the referent), referring to: (1) a son of Midian and grandson of Abraham through Keturah (Gen 25:4), and (2) a son of Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, who became the ancestor of the Hanochite clan (Gen 46:9, Exod 6:14, Num 26:5). These are distinct individuals from the antediluvian Enoch figures. The multilingual glosses sometimes mark the distinction: Arabic حَنُوك vs. خَنُوخ, Korean 하녹 vs. 에뇽, Spanish Janoj vs. Hanoj, though French and German vary (Hanoch vs. Chanoch). The 1 Chronicles 5:3 occurrence preserves the Reubenite genealogy. 6×
