Halah: Assyrian district where Israelite exiles were settled
A city or district under Assyrian control where Israelite captives were deported following the fall of Samaria in 722 BC. The location is mentioned in the historical accounts of the Assyrian exile alongside the Habor river and the cities of the Medes. Scholars have identified it with Ḫalaḫḫu in Mesopotamia, though some have suggested Cilicia. The name marks one of the tragic destinations of the northern kingdom's deportation, representing the scattering of Israel among the nations.

Senses
1. sense 1 An Assyrian-controlled territory serving as a destination for deported Israelites. 2 Kings 17:6 and 18:11 describe identical deportations 'to Halah and Habor,' while 1 Chronicles 5:26 includes Halah in the list of exile locations for the Transjordanian tribes. The preposition לְ (to/in) typically accompanies the name, indicating direction or location. Transliterations vary slightly (Spanish Jalaj/Halaj, English Halah), but consistently preserve the consonantal structure.
