Be extinguished (Niphal); flame or life snuffed out (Job 17:1)
This verb appears in Job's lament in 17:1: 'My days are extinguished.' The imagery is of a lamp or fire being snuffed out—life's flame dying. Elsewhere the Bible uses 'da'ak' for this concept, and some scholars think this is a scribal error for that verb. The parallel phrase 'my spirit is broken' reinforces the sense of vitality ebbing away. Job sees himself as a dying flame, his life-force consumed by suffering and approaching death.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Be extinguished or snuffed out in Job 17:1, describing Job's days and life ebbing away. The imagery draws on lamps or fires being quenched—life's flame dying. Some consider this a scribal variant of 'da'ak' (the more common term for 'extinguish'), but the sense is clear: Job perceives himself as a fading light approaching darkness. The parallel 'my spirit is broken' intensifies the image of expiring vitality. 1×
