Hinnom — a proper name in the toponym Ge-ben-Hinnom ('Valley of the son of Hinnom'), south of Jerusalem
A proper name of uncertain etymology, known exclusively as part of the compound toponym ge-ben-hinnom or ge-hinnom — the 'Valley of (the son of) Hinnom' — a ravine running along the southern edge of Jerusalem. In Joshua 15:8 and 18:16 it appears as a neutral boundary marker between Judah and Benjamin. Its darker associations emerge in Kings, Chronicles, and Jeremiah, where it becomes the site of child sacrifice to Molech (2 Kgs 23:10; 2 Chr 28:3; 33:6; Jer 7:31-32; 19:2, 6; 32:35). Jeremiah prophesies its renaming as the 'Valley of Slaughter.' This toponym later yields the Greek Gehenna, the New Testament term for eschatological judgment.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The personal or clan name Hinnom, preserved only within the geographical expression 'Valley of (the son of) Hinnom.' It functions as a topographic boundary term in Joshua (15:8; 18:16), a cultic site of Molech worship and child sacrifice in Kings and Chronicles (2 Kgs 23:10; 2 Chr 28:3; 33:6), and a prophetic symbol of divine judgment in Jeremiah (7:31-32; 19:2, 6; 32:35). All translations transliterate the name directly — eng Hinnom, spa Hinnom/Hinom, fra Hinnom, deu Hinnom — with no attempt at semantic rendering, confirming its status as an opaque proper noun. 13×
