Onward, further, beyond — an adverb of spatial or temporal extension from a reference point
An adverb expressing directional or temporal continuation outward from a given point. Spatially, it can mean 'get back!' as in the Sodomites' rebuff of Lot (Gen 19:9), 'scatter yonder' when Moses commands the fire pans dispersed (Num 16:37), or 'beyond' a location such as Damascus (Amos 5:27) or Migdal-eder (Gen 35:21). Temporally, combined with age markers, it sets lower bounds for service — 'from eight days onward' for sacrificial animals (Lev 22:27) or 'from such-and-such an age onward' for Levitical duty (Num 8:24-25; 1 Chr 23:24, 27). French 'au-dela' and Spanish 'mas alla de' both capture the core sense of extending past a boundary.
Senses
1. onward, further, beyond — An adverb meaning 'onward, further, beyond,' expressing spatial or temporal extension from a reference point. Spatially it indicates direction away — 'make way!' (Gen 19:9), 'scatter yonder' (Num 16:37), 'beyond Damascus' (Amos 5:27), 'beyond the tower of the flock' (Gen 35:21). Temporally it sets open-ended thresholds: 'from eight days onward' for sacrificial eligibility (Lev 22:27), 'from twenty-five years old and onward' for Levitical service (Num 8:24). Always paired with directional prepositions (le-, me-, wa-), it never stands alone but anchors extension from a named baseline. 16×
