to become, be, come to pass; a rare poetic synonym of hayah
A rare verb functioning as a poetic synonym of the common hayah ('to be, become'). In Genesis 27:29, Isaac commands Jacob to 'become lord to your brothers.' Isaiah 16:4 uses the feminine imperative in an appeal for Moab to provide shelter, possibly imitating Moabite dialect. Ecclesiastes employs the participle (2:22) and imperfect (11:3) in reflections on what comes to pass. Nehemiah 6:6 quotes a rumor about what someone is 'becoming.' The Aramaic cognate became the standard word for 'to be.'

Senses
1. sense 1 To become, to be, to come to pass — a rare Hebrew verb cognate with the common Aramaic hawa. Genesis 27:29 uses the imperative in Isaac's blessing: 'be lord to your brothers' (Spanish 'sé,' French 'sois'). Isaiah 16:4 employs the feminine imperative hevi in a plea for shelter, perhaps reflecting Moabite coloring. Ecclesiastes uses the participle (2:22, 'what is becoming of') and the apocopated imperfect (11:3, 'there it shall be'). Its rarity in Hebrew contrasts with its dominance in Aramaic, where it replaced hayah entirely.
