Abel (Hevel); second son of Adam, whose offering God accepted and who was murdered by his brother Cain.
Hevel (Abel) is the second son of Adam and Eve, a keeper of flocks whose sacrifice of the firstborn of his flock found favor with God (Gen 4:4). His brother Cain, a tiller of the ground, killed him in jealousy—the first murder in Scripture (Gen 4:8). God's response to Cain, 'the voice of your brother's blood cries to me from the ground' (Gen 4:10), makes Hevel a paradigm of innocent suffering. The name may be related to the common noun hevel ('breath, vapor'), though BDB suggests a possible Assyrian cognate ablu ('son').
