Darius — the Persian royal name borne by Darius Hystaspis and 'Darius the Mede' in Scripture
The Hebrew form דָּרְיָוֶשׁ renders the Old Persian name Dārayavauš ('he who holds firm the good'). In Ezra it identifies Darius I Hystaspis, under whose decree the Jerusalem temple was completed (Ezra 4:24; 5:5–7; 6:1, 12–15). In Daniel it names the enigmatic 'Darius the Mede' who receives the kingdom after Belshazzar's fall (Dan 5:31; 6:1–28). Haggai and Zechariah date their prophecies to 'the second year of Darius' (Hag 1:1; Zech 1:1). European translations consistently use 'Darius/Darío,' while some transliterations stay closer to the Hebrew form (eng 'Daryavesh').

Cross-lingual glosses range from close transliterations (eng 'Daryavesh') to conventional Europeanizations (spa 'Darío', fra/deu 'Darius'). 15×
