V-Pual-Prtcpl-mp  |  11× in 2 senses
To pierce or thrust through fatally with a weapon; in passive forms, to be pierced, slain, or fatally wounded.
A verb of violent piercing -- the fatal thrust of spear or sword that ends a life. Phinehas drives his spear through the Israelite man and Midianite woman (Num 25:8), Abimelech begs his armor-bearer to 'thrust me through' to avoid the shame of death by a woman's hand (Judg 9:54), and Saul makes the same desperate request on Mount Gilboa (1 Sam 31:4). The passive forms describe the result: battlefield dead who lie 'pierced through' (Isa 13:15; Jer 51:4). Most strikingly, Zechariah 12:10 prophesies 'they shall look on me whom they have pierced' -- a text the Gospel of John applies directly to the crucifixion (John 19:37), giving this verb a profound messianic resonance across traditions.

Senses
1. pierce, thrust through To pierce or thrust through with a weapon (Qal active), always describing a fatal or near-fatal stabbing. Phinehas pierces the transgressing couple (Num 25:8), Abimelech's armor-bearer thrusts him through at his request (Judg 9:54), and Saul asks the same of his own armor-bearer (1 Sam 31:4; 1 Chr 10:4). Zechariah 12:10 uses the Qal perfect in the messianic prophecy 'they shall look on me whom they have pierced' -- a text cited in John 19:37. Spanish 'traspasar/atravesar' and French 'percer' capture the sense of driving a weapon completely through the body.

2. be pierced, be wounded To be pierced or fatally wounded (Pual participle and Niphal), describing those who have been stabbed through and lie slain. Isaiah 13:15 prophesies that in Babylon's fall 'everyone found will be thrust through,' and Jeremiah 51:4 uses the same language for casualties in Chaldean streets. Lamentations 4:9 contrasts those 'pierced by the sword' with those who die of famine -- the pierced are considered more fortunate. The passive forms emphasize the resulting state of the victim rather than the attacker's action.
