Dammeseq is the Hebrew name for Damascus, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, situated in the fertile oasis east of Mount Hermon and watered by the Barada River (the ancient Chrysorrhoas). Across its 45 Old Testament occurrences, the city appears first in Abram's nocturnal pursuit of the kings 'as far as Hobah, north of Damascus' (Gen 14:15) and in the enigmatic reference to Eliezer of Damascus (Gen 15:2). It rises to prominence as the capital of Aram under Rezon (1 Kgs 11:24) and remains Israel's chief northern rival through the era of Ahaz, who traveled there to copy a pagan altar (2 Kgs 16:10-12). The prophets wield it as a symbol of judgment: Amos opens his oracle cycle with 'for three transgressions of Damascus' (Amos 1:3), and Isaiah prophesies its destruction (Isa 17:1).
