rams (Aramaic)—male sheep offered in sacrifice in Ezra
This Aramaic noun is the equivalent of Hebrew zachar ('male') and refers to rams used in temple sacrifices. All three occurrences are in Ezra's account of restoring temple worship after the exile. Ezra 6:9, 17 and 7:17 list rams among the animals to be provided for burnt offerings and sacrifices. The word is cognate with Syriac and shares the Aramaic doubling of meaning: both 'male' and specifically 'ram.' These rams represent the renewed sacrificial system under Persian patronage, fulfilling Cyrus's decree to support Jewish worship.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Aramaic noun for rams (male sheep), appearing three times in Ezra in contexts of temple sacrifice. Ezra 6:9 lists rams (dikhrin) among animals needed for offerings. Ezra 6:17 enumerates rams in the dedication sacrifice. Ezra 7:17 includes rams with conjunction 'and rams' (ve-dikhrin) in Ezra's purchase list for offerings. Cross-linguistic glosses are consistent: English 'rams/and rams,' Spanish 'carneros/y carneros,' French and German use placeholder brackets for the Aramaic forms. The plural form dikhrin appears in all instances. This is Aramaic cultic vocabulary for sacrificial animals in the restored post-exilic temple worship authorized by Persian decree. 3×
