To fear, be terrified; in passive, terrifying or dreadful (Aramaic verb used in Daniel).
An Aramaic verb found exclusively in Daniel, dechal covers the full spectrum of dread in Nebuchadnezzar's court. Its passive participle describes the terrifying fourth beast (Dan 7:7, 19) and the fearsome statue of Daniel 2:31, while its active participle captures the trembling of nations before a king or before God (Dan 5:19; 6:26). In the Pael stem, a dream 'frightens' the king himself (Dan 4:5). Spanish atemorizó and terrible mirror these two directions of fear: terror inflicted and terror experienced.
Senses
1. terrifying — Terrifying, dreadful (passive participle): describing something that inspires fear by its very appearance. Used of the great statue (Dan 2:31) and the fourth beast with iron teeth (Dan 7:7, 19). Spanish terrible and the terrifying quality conveyed across translations confirm a consistent sense of monstrous, awe-inducing dread. 3×

2. and fearing — Fearing, trembling (active participle with min-qodam): the experience of dread before a powerful figure. In Dan 5:19 all peoples feared before Nebuchadnezzar; in Dan 6:26 Darius decrees trembling before Daniel's God. Spanish y temiendo ('and fearing') captures the posture of reverent or cowering fear directed toward an authority. 2×

3. and frightened me — To frighten, cause fear (Pael causative): the dream actively terrified the king. Dan 4:5 uses the Pael imperfect with pronominal suffix: 'it frightened me.' Spanish y me atemorizó ('and it terrified me') preserves the causative force, marking this as the only occurrence where the verb takes an agent (the dream) acting upon the subject. 1×
