Doeg: an Edomite servant of Saul who betrayed the priests of Nob and slaughtered them (1 Sam 22:18).
Doeg the Edomite was a chief herdsman of Saul who witnessed David receiving aid from Ahimelech the priest at Nob (1 Sam 21:7). When Saul demanded to know who had helped David, Doeg informed against the priests and then personally executed eighty-five of them when Saul's own soldiers refused (1 Sam 22:9, 18). His treachery is commemorated in the superscription of Psalm 52, where David denounces the boasting of the mighty man who loves evil more than good. Doeg stands in the biblical narrative as a byword for deadly slander and merciless violence.

Senses
1. Doeg The personal name of an Edomite in Saul's service, meaning perhaps 'anxious' or 'fearful.' All nine occurrences refer to the same individual. Spanish renders the name 'Doeg' with the Qere form noted, while French and German preserve the Hebrew form alongside the transliteration. His story unfolds entirely within 1 Samuel 21-22 and the title of Psalm 52, forming a compact but devastating portrait of betrayal and religious persecution.
