Gath — a major Philistine city-state, home of Goliath and site of key encounters between Israel and Philistia
Gath (literally 'winepress') is the proper name of one of the five principal Philistine cities, appearing 33 times in the Hebrew Bible. It was home to the Anakim remnant (Josh 11:22) and most famously to Goliath, 'the Philistine of Gath' (1 Sam 17:4, 23). David fled there twice to escape Saul, feigning madness before King Achish (1 Sam 21:10-15) and later settling as a vassal at nearby Ziklag (1 Sam 27:2-4). David's lament over Saul and Jonathan pleads, 'Tell it not in Gath' (2 Sam 1:20), an idiom that became proverbial. The city passed through Israelite and Aramean hands — Rehoboam fortified it (2 Chr 11:8), Hazael of Aram captured it (2 Kgs 12:17) — and eventually vanished from the archaeological record. Amos warns Israel not to boast by comparison with 'Gath of the Philistines' (Amos 6:2). The Septuagint renders it Geth, and modern translations preserve the name unchanged.
