Geshur: an Aramean kingdom east of the upper Jordan, homeland of Absalom's mother Maacah (2 Sam 3:3).
Geshur was a small Aramean kingdom situated east of the Sea of Galilee, in the region later known as the Golan. Its most memorable role in Scripture is as the homeland of Maacah daughter of Talmai, one of David's wives and the mother of Absalom (2 Sam 3:3). When Absalom fled after murdering his half-brother Amnon, he took refuge in Geshur for three years under his grandfather's protection (2 Sam 13:37-38). Joshua notes that Israel never drove out the Geshurites, who continued dwelling among the Israelites (Josh 13:13).

Senses
1. Geshur (place name) The proper name of an Aramean territory and its people, located east of the upper Jordan between Gilead and Mount Hermon. Translations consistently render it 'Geshur' across English, Spanish (Gesur/Guesur), French, and German, with prepositional prefixes reflecting movement to or residence in the land. The name possibly means 'bridge' or 'land of bridges,' fitting its position as a transit zone between Israel and Aram. Prominent in the Absalom narratives (2 Sam 3:3; 13:37-38; 14:23, 32; 15:8) and in Joshua's account of unconquered peoples (Josh 13:13).
