Gaal son of Ebed, a Canaanite agitator who led a short-lived revolt against Abimelech at Shechem.
A proper name for an apparently Canaanite figure who appears exclusively in Judges 9. Gaal son of Ebed arrived in Shechem and incited the local landowners against Abimelech's rule, boasting at a grape harvest festival that he would overthrow him (Judg 9:26-29). When challenged by Zebul, Abimelech's prefect, Gaal led his followers out to battle but was soundly defeated and driven from the city (Judg 9:35-41). All major translations preserve the name uniformly as 'Gaal' across English, Spanish, French, and German.
