Gilboa (mountain range where Saul died)
This mountain range in northern Israel became infamous as the site of Saul's final battle and death. First and Second Samuel, along with Chronicles, repeatedly name Gilboa in connection with this catastrophic defeat by the Philistines. David's lament in 2 Samuel 1:21 curses the mountains: 'Let there be no dew or rain upon you, O mountains of Gilboa!' The name may mean 'bubbling spring' or relate to baldness/barrenness, ironically appropriate given David's curse. The geographical site remains identifiable in modern Israel, still bearing witness to that ancient tragedy.
Senses
1. the Gilboa — The mountain range where Saul and his sons died fighting the Philistines (1 Samuel 31; 2 Samuel 1). All languages preserve the proper name (Gilboa/Gilboa/Gilboa/Gilboa) through transliteration, standard for significant biblical geography. David's poetic curse made Gilboa synonymous with barrenness and tragedy in Israelite memory. The site's continued identification shows how certain biblical locations retain their names and associations across millennia. 8×
