Gibeonite — an inhabitant of Gibeon, the city that made a covenant of peace with Israel.
A gentilic adjective identifying someone from Gibeon, the Hivite city whose inhabitants famously deceived Joshua into a peace treaty (Josh 9). In 2 Samuel 21:1–9, the Gibeonites demand justice for Saul's violation of that covenant, and David negotiates with them — this passage accounts for the majority of the word's eight occurrences. In Nehemiah 3:7 and 1 Chronicles 12:4, individual Gibeonites are mentioned by name. Spanish guivonitas and gabeonita, along with French and German forms, all reflect the gentilic pattern. The term carries the weight of a covenantal relationship that even kings cannot abrogate.

Senses
1. Gibeonite (gentilic) A gentilic adjective/noun designating an inhabitant of Gibeon. Most occurrences cluster in 2 Samuel 21:1–9, where the Gibeonites (plural) seek restitution from David for Saul's breach of the ancient covenant made in Joshua 9. In 1 Chronicles 12:4, a single Gibeonite warrior joins David's ranks, and Nehemiah 3:7 names a Gibeonite among Jerusalem's wall-builders. Spanish gabeonita and French Gibeonites follow standard gentilic rendering. The word underscores the enduring covenantal bond between Israel and this non-Israelite community.
