Bathsheba — 'daughter of an oath'; wife of Uriah the Hittite, then of David; mother of Solomon
The name Bathsheba (בַּת־שֶׁבַע, 'daughter of an oath' or 'daughter of abundance') belongs to one of the most pivotal women in Israel's royal history. First introduced as the wife of Uriah the Hittite (2 Sam 11:3), she becomes the catalyst for David's great sin and subsequent repentance. After the death of their first child, she bears Solomon (2 Sam 12:24), and later secures his succession by appearing boldly before the aging David (1 Kgs 1:11-31). She is the only woman Solomon rises to greet and seats at his right hand (1 Kgs 2:19). Spanish renders it 'Betsabé,' Hindi बत्शेबा, Arabic بَثْشَبَعُ.
