Barak ('lightning'), son of Abinoam, military leader who defeated Sisera under Deborah's guidance.
The proper name of the Israelite commander who, at Deborah the prophetess's summons, mustered ten thousand men from Naphtali and Zebulun to rout the Canaanite general Sisera at the Wadi Kishon (Judg 4–5). His name means 'lightning,' cognate with the Punic surname Barcas borne by Hamilcar's family. All thirteen occurrences cluster in Judges 4:6–22 and the Song of Deborah in Judges 5:1, 12, 15. Every major translation—Spanish, French, German—simply transliterates the name as 'Barak.'
