Barzillai -- a proper name, chiefly the wealthy Gileadite who supported David during Absalom's revolt
Barzillai (barzillay, 'man of iron,' from barzel, 'iron') is a proper name borne principally by Barzillai the Gileadite, an elderly and wealthy man from Rogelim who provided provisions for David and his entourage during their flight from Absalom across the Jordan (2 Sam 17:27-29). When David returned in triumph, the eighty-year-old Barzillai met him at the Jordan but declined the king's invitation to come to Jerusalem, pleading his age and diminished senses (2 Sam 19:31-39). David charged Solomon to show loyalty to Barzillai's sons (1 Kgs 2:7). A priestly family also bore this name, having intermarried with Barzillai's descendants (Ezra 2:61; Neh 7:63). Spanish Barzilai, French Barzillai, and German Barsillai preserve the name across traditions.
