N-proper-ms  |  7× in 1 sense
Belshazzar; the last king of Babylon in the book of Daniel, who saw the handwriting on the wall at his final feast.
The Aramaic proper name of Belshazzar (בֵּלְשַׁאצַּר), the Babylonian king featured in Daniel 5 and referenced in Daniel 7:1 and 8:1. He is the ruler who held the infamous banquet at which the mysterious hand wrote on the wall, pronouncing the doom of his kingdom (Dan 5:1-30). Historically the son of Nabonidus and co-regent of Babylon, his name means 'Bel, protect the king' in Akkadian. The narrative of his feast and fall has become one of the most iconic scenes in biblical literature, giving rise to the proverbial expression 'the writing on the wall.'

Senses
1. Belshazzar (Babylonian king) The proper name of the last Babylonian king as presented in Daniel. All translation traditions preserve the name through transliteration — English 'Belshazzar,' Spanish 'Belsasar,' French 'Beltschatsar,' German 'Belsazar' — with minor phonetic variation reflecting each language's adaptation of the Akkadian theophoric name. The two orthographic forms in Daniel (בֵּלְשַׁאצַּר in 5:1-29 and בֵּלְאשַׁצַּר in 5:30; 7:1; 8:1) refer to the same individual, differing only in the metathesis of shin and aleph. His occurrences span the feast narrative (Dan 5:1, 2, 9, 22, 29), his death notice (5:30), and chronological references (7:1; 8:1).
