Bela -- a proper name borne by an early king of Edom and a son of Benjamin
Bela (bela') is a Hebrew proper name meaning 'destruction' or 'swallowing,' from the root bala' ('to swallow'). It is borne by at least two distinct figures in the Old Testament. The first is Bela son of Beor, the earliest named king of Edom who reigned in the city of Dinhabah before any king ruled in Israel (Gen 36:32-33; 1 Chr 1:43-44). The second is Bela son of Benjamin, a grandson of Jacob listed among those who went down to Egypt (Gen 46:21; Num 26:38, 40; 1 Chr 7:6-7; 8:1, 3). The city Bela is also identified with Zoar in Genesis 14:2, 8. Every target language retains the name with minimal phonological adjustment.
