בֵּֽיתְאֵל71 H1008
Bethel — 'house of God'; an ancient Canaanite city in Ephraim, a major Israelite cultic site tied to Jacob's vision.
Beth-El means 'house of God,' a name given by Jacob to the place formerly called Luz after his vision of the ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending upon it (Gen 28:10-19). Located in the hill country of Ephraim near the border of Benjamin, Bethel became one of the most significant cultic sites in Israelite history. The ark of the covenant was stationed there during the period of the judges (Judg 20:26-28), Samuel included it on his circuit (1 Sam 7:16), and — most controversially — Jeroboam I established one of his two golden calves there (1 Kgs 12:28-33), making Bethel a byword for idolatrous worship that the prophets fiercely condemned (Hos 10:15; Amos 3:14; 4:4). Spanish Betel, French Bethel, and German Bethel all preserve the name.
Senses
1. Bethel (city) — The place name Bethel ('house of God'), identifying the ancient city in the hill country of Ephraim where Jacob saw the heavenly ladder and consecrated a pillar (Gen 28:10-19; 35:1-15), where the ark was housed during the judges (Judg 20:26-28), and where Jeroboam I later erected a golden calf, turning it into a center of condemned worship (1 Kgs 12:28-33; Amos 3:14; Hos 10:15). All target languages transliterate the name, though its etymology — beth ('house') + el ('God') — is transparent in Hebrew. 72×
