Ashkenaz, descendant of Japheth and northern people; possibly Bithynian (Ascanians)
Both a personal name and an ethnic designation. As a person, Ashkenaz was a descendant of Japheth through Gomer. As a people, they appear in Jeremiah's oracle against Babylon, summoned alongside Ararat and Minni to attack. Scholars identify them with a northern people, possibly the Ascanians of Bithynia or an Armenian group. Later Jewish tradition applied 'Ashkenaz' to Germanic lands, but the biblical references point to Anatolia or the Caucasus region.

Senses
1. sense 1 A personal name (Genesis 10:3, 1 Chronicles 1:6) and northern people-group (Jeremiah 51:27). In Jeremiah, Ashkenaz is called to war against Babylon alongside the kingdoms of Ararat and Minni, suggesting a location in the Armenian highlands or Anatolia. The geographic evidence from Spanish and other translations consistently treats this as a proper name requiring minimal translation.
