Ashdod — a major Philistine city on the Mediterranean coast, one of the five cities of the pentapolis
The name of one of the five principal cities of the Philistine confederation, situated on the Mediterranean coastal plain west of Jerusalem (modern Isdud/Ashdod). It enters the biblical narrative as a city where Anakim remnants survived (Josh 11:22), was allotted to Judah but never fully conquered (Josh 15:46-47), and became infamous as the place where the captured ark of God was set before Dagon, whose idol toppled and broke (1 Sam 5:1-7). Prophets pronounced judgment against it (Amos 1:8; Zeph 2:4; Zech 9:6), and Uzziah dismantled its walls (2 Chr 26:6). The Assyrian form 'Asdudu' confirms its ancient Near Eastern attestation.
