Aram — proper noun for a Semitic people and their territory in upper Mesopotamia and Syria, also a personal name in genealogies
Aram appears 133 times as both a personal and geographic name. In the Table of Nations it is the fifth son of Shem (Gen 10:22), and 'Aram' also names a grandson of Nahor (Gen 22:21). Far more often, however, the word designates the Aramean people and their territories stretching from the Euphrates bend through Damascus and into northern Syria — the persistent neighbor, rival, and sometimes overlord of Israel and Judah. The compound expressions Aram-Naharaim ('Aram of the two rivers,' Gen 24:10), Aram-Damascus, and Aram-Zobah identify specific Aramean kingdoms. The wars between Israel and Aram dominate much of Kings and Chronicles (1 Kgs 20; 2 Kgs 5-8). The Septuagint typically renders it Syria.

Senses
1. Aram (proper noun: person/place) The proper noun Aram, designating both a person (fifth son of Shem, Gen 10:22-23; also a grandson of Nahor, Gen 22:21) and the Semitic people and territory known as Aram, spanning upper Mesopotamia and Syria. In historical narrative it refers primarily to the Aramean kingdoms — especially Aram-Damascus — that were Israel's frequent military adversary through the monarchic period (1 Kgs 20:1-34; 2 Kgs 5-8; 2 Chr 18:30). Spanish and German transliterate as 'Aram,' French follows suit, while the Septuagint characteristically substitutes 'Syria,' a practice reflected in the NT compound 'Syrophoenician.' 133×
