Archevites (people from Erech)
The Archevites (or Urukites) were people from the ancient city of Erech (Biblical Hebrew: Erekh; modern Uruk in Iraq). They appear among the foreign settlers in Samaria opposing Jerusalem's reconstruction. The Kethiv/Qere variation reflects scribal tradition preserving two textual readings.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Ethnic designation in Ezra 4:9 (appearing twice due to Kethiv/Qere variants) for colonists from Erech settled in Samaria by Assyrian policy. The city of Erech (Uruk) was one of ancient Mesopotamia's great urban centers. The dual citation reflects the Masoretic practice of noting variant readings, both pointing to the same referent. 2×
