In Genesis 50:17 Joseph's brothers beg forgiveness; in Exodus 32:31 Moses intercedes after the golden calf; in 2 Kings 20:3 Hezekiah pleads for his life; and in Nehemiah 1:5, 11 the cupbearer opens his prayer to God. Spanish renders it 'por favor' or 'oh,' while French uses 'de grâce'—each capturing the note of urgent, respectful appeal. The word signals that the speaker recognizes the weight of what is being asked.
