H0533 H0533
Mighty, strong, courageous; describing powerful persons, forces, or God's irresistible strength.
An adjective conveying formidable power and resolute courage. It describes Absalom's conspiracy growing 'strong' (2 Sam 15:12), pictures God as 'wise in heart and mighty in power' (Job 9:4, 19), and portrays the Assyrian invader as God's fierce instrument (Isa 28:2). In Amos 2:16, the 'stout of heart' — the bravest warrior — will flee naked in the day of judgment. Isaiah 40:26 applies it to God who marshals the stars by the greatness of his might: not one is missing. Spanish renders it 'fuerte' and 'poderoso,' French 'fort' — all converging on the idea of overwhelming strength.
Senses
1. mighty, strong, courageous — Denotes formidable strength, might, or valor, applied to persons, conspiracies, and supremely to God. Used of Absalom's conspiracy growing powerful (2 Sam 15:12), of God's irresistible might in wisdom and power (Job 9:4, 19), of the Assyrian agent of divine judgment described as both 'strong' and 'mighty' (Isa 28:2), of the bravest warrior fleeing in terror on the day of the LORD (Amos 2:16), and of God who calls the starry host by name with great might so that not one is absent (Isa 40:26). Spanish 'fuerte/poderoso' and French 'fort' uniformly capture the sense of overwhelming, often irresistible power. 6×
