Achish is the Philistine king of Gath who figures prominently in the David narratives. When David first fled to him, he feigned madness to escape (1 Sam 21:11-15). Later David returned and was granted the town of Ziklag, living among the Philistines for over a year (1 Sam 27:1-12). Achish trusted David enough to include him in the march against Israel at Gilboa, though the other Philistine lords objected (1 Sam 29). A later Achish appears in 1 Kings 2:39-40, to whom Shimei's servants fled. The name may be connected to the Syriac word for 'anger,' though the etymology remains uncertain.
