vigor, strength, manly power; wealth, substance, riches

Senses
1. vigor, strength, manly power Physical vigor, strength, manly power, vitality. The primary sense of on as bodily or reproductive vigor. Jacob calls Reuben 'the firstfruits of my vigor' (Gen 49:3 oni, referring to procreative power as firstborn son). In Deut 21:17 the firstborn is identified as 'the beginning of his strength' (ono). Job 18:7,12 speaks of a wicked man's strength being hemmed in and calamity at his side. Psalm 78:51 describes God striking 'the firstfruits of strength' (onim) in Egypt, i.e., the firstborn. Psalm 105:36 similarly: God struck 'their strength' (onam), the firstborn. Job 40:16 speaks of Behemoth's power (ono) in its loins. Isaiah 40:26,29 uses the plural onim for God's might and the strengthening of those without power. Hosea 12:3(4) describes Jacob's struggle 'in his strength' (ube'ono). Consistent translations: Arabic quwwah 'strength/power,' German Staerke, Korean him/ginyeok 'strength/vigor,' Spanish vigor/poder, Hindi shakti/bal, French force/puissance. 10×

2. wealth, substance, riches Material wealth, substance, riches -- an extension from 'power/vigor' to the resources or possessions that power produces. In Job 20:10 the wicked man's children must restore 'his wealth' (ono), where the context is explicitly economic (v.15 'the riches he swallowed he must vomit up'). In Hosea 12:8(9), Ephraim boasts 'I have found wealth' (on), paired with the assertion that none of his gains contain iniquity. The context in Hosea is commercial prosperity and trade, clearly distinguishing this from physical strength. Multilingual glosses confirm the economic meaning: Arabic tharwatan 'wealth/riches,' Hindi dhan 'wealth/riches,' Korean jaemul 'property/riches,' Spanish riqueza 'riches,' German Unheil (a gloss anomaly, but likely contextual). This sense is attested in BDB as a recognized secondary meaning of on.
