אֲדֹנִיָּ֫הוּ H0138
Adonijah ('my Lord is Yahweh'); chiefly David's fourth son who contested Solomon's succession, also two other biblical figures.
A theophoric name meaning 'my Lord is Yahweh,' borne most prominently by David's fourth son whose dramatic bid for the throne dominates 1 Kings 1-2. Adonijah secured the support of Joab and Abiathar but was outmaneuvered by Nathan and Bathsheba, who ensured Solomon's coronation. His later request for Abishag proved fatal (1 Kgs 2:13-25). The name also belongs to a Levite teacher in Jehoshaphat's reform (2 Chr 17:8) and a postexilic leader who sealed Nehemiah's covenant (Neh 10:17). All translations simply transliterate: 'Adonijah/Adoniyah/Adonija.'
Senses
1. Adonijah son of David — The personal name Adonijah designating David's fourth son, whose failed attempt to claim the throne before Solomon's anointing is narrated in 1 Kings 1-2. Almost all 24 occurrences cluster in this succession narrative. The multilingual glosses ('for-Adonijah/a-Adoniyahu/pour-Adonija/fuer-Adonijah') consistently add prepositions reflecting the narrative's political alignments -- who was 'for' or 'against' Adonijah. 24×

2. Adonijah (other persons) — The same name borne by two other individuals: a Levite commissioned by King Jehoshaphat to teach Torah throughout Judah (2 Chr 17:8), and a clan leader identified with Adonikam's family who sealed Nehemiah's covenant (Neh 10:17; cf. Ezra 2:13). Only 2 occurrences fall here; French and German bracket the Hebrew form [אדניה] in their glosses, signaling less-familiar referents. 2×
