Edomi -- Edomite; a person from Edom, the nation descended from Esau, east and south of the Dead Sea
The gentilic noun Edomi (Hebrew אֲדֹמִי, 'Edomite') designates a person belonging to the nation of Edom, the territory southeast of the Dead Sea settled by the descendants of Esau (Gen 36). Despite the enmity between Israel and Edom, the Torah commands: 'Do not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother' (Deut 23:7). The term is applied most memorably to Doeg the Edomite, Saul's chief herdsman who betrayed the priests of Nob (1 Sam 21:7; 22:9, 18; Ps 52 title). It also appears in reference to Edomite women among Solomon's foreign wives (1 Kgs 11:1) and to the Edomites as enemies in Hadad's narrative (1 Kgs 11:14-17). All twelve occurrences denote the same ethnic identity with only number and gender inflection varying.
