Avram ('exalted father') is the birth name of the patriarch whom God later renamed Abraham ('father of a multitude') at the institution of circumcision (Gen 17:5). All 61 occurrences fall within the early Abraham narratives of Genesis 11-17 plus retrospective references in 1 Chronicles 1:27 and Nehemiah 9:7. The name change is theologically loaded: Avram designates the man before the covenant of circumcision, Abraham the covenant partner of God who would father many nations. The etymological word-play in Genesis 17:5 is one of the Bible's most memorable naming moments. Every target language preserves the name unchanged -- Spanish, French, German, and English all render it simply as Abram.
