V-PIA-1P  |  5× in 1 sense
to need, have need of, require — expressing want or necessity
Chrezo expresses the state of needing or requiring something, built on the impersonal chre ('it is necessary'). In Jesus' teaching, it appears in his reassurance that the Father already knows what his followers need before they ask (Matt 6:32; Luke 12:30), removing anxiety from the equation of provision. Luke uses it of a persistent neighbor who has need at midnight (Luke 11:8). Paul employs it when commending Phoebe, asking the Roman church to assist her in whatever matter she may need (Rom 16:2), and rhetorically asking whether he needs letters of recommendation (2 Cor 3:1). The Spanish 'necesitar' and French 'avoir besoin' closely mirror this sense of genuine requirement.

Senses
1. sense 1 To have need of, to require — denoting a genuine lack or necessity that calls for supply or assistance. Jesus uses it to assure disciples that their heavenly Father knows their material needs (Matt 6:32; Luke 12:30). It also describes a neighbor's midnight need (Luke 11:8), Phoebe's need for practical help from the Roman congregation (Rom 16:2), and Paul's rhetorical question about needing commendatory letters (2 Cor 3:1). All 5 occurrences express straightforward necessity, confirmed by uniform translations: Spanish 'necesitar,' French 'avoir besoin,' German 'beduerfen.'
