N-AFS  |  49× in 1 sense
need, necessity, lack — a state of requiring what is absent, or the service/task that must be done
Chreia denotes the condition of needing something — whether spiritual, physical, or practical — and by extension the thing needed or the service rendered. Jesus declares that 'those who are well have no need of a physician' (Matt 9:12), the Father 'knows what you need before you ask' (Matt 6:8), and the early church distributed 'as any had need' (Acts 2:45; 4:35). Paul expands the word into the theology of mutual dependence within the body of Christ: 'the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you' (1 Cor 12:21). Occasionally chreia shades toward 'task' or 'service' — the Lord 'has need of' the colt (Matt 21:3). Spanish 'necesidad,' French 'besoin,' and German 'Bedarf' all capture this core sense of lack pressing toward fulfillment.

Senses
1. need, necessity, lack A state of requiring something that is lacking, the thing required, or the service to be rendered. Spans Jesus' pronouncement that the healthy need no physician (Matt 9:12), the divine foreknowledge of human needs (Matt 6:8 'your Father knows what you need'), the early community's radical sharing (Acts 2:45 'as any had need'), and Paul's ecclesiology of mutual dependence (1 Cor 12:21). In a few passages the sense tilts toward 'business' or 'errand' (Acts 6:3 'this task'). All 49 occurrences orbit this unified semantic of necessity-and-supply. 49×
