Made of dust, earthy; pertaining to the material, mortal nature of humanity formed from soil.
An adjective derived from chous (dust, soil), describing what is made from earth or belongs to the realm of dust. Paul uses it exclusively in 1 Corinthians 15:47-49 to contrast the first Adam, who is choïkos -- formed from the ground (Gen 2:7) -- with the second Adam (Christ), who is from heaven. Believers currently bear the image of the earthly man but will bear the image of the heavenly. Spanish terrenal, French terrestre, and German irdisch all reflect this earthy-versus-heavenly polarity that structures Paul's resurrection argument.
